• Michael receives anonymous email with death threat to family if he does not close his Bali business.
  August 2007 6 December 2005...

  Hours before returning to Bali with the boys from a California vacation, Michael receives an email death threat.

  Michael leaves the boys in California with their grandparents, returns alone to Bali to confront Made Jati. But Made Jati refuses to meet Michael, and while Michael is at Kori restaurant, IB Wikantara leads a group of “premen” and chases Michael and Gary Hewson from the restaurant.

  On the advice of the U.S. Embassy and friends at Polda that “this situation is dangerous”, Michael returns to California.

  Made Jati continues to refuse communication for the next 9 months.

  With the excuse that all witnesses—meaning NMJ's witnesses—agree that the marriage took place in 1996, and since pengelapan or “embezzlement” is impossible between husband and wife, there was no crime.

• Michael reports “use of false documents” to Polda Bali
  November 2005

  With help from M. Rifan of Austrindo Law Office, Michael finally reports NMJ's false marriage documents at Polda Bali. Rifan and the investigator Wayan Karta file it as an investigation of penggelapan, which they explain means “fraud”. In fact penggelapan means “embezzlement”, technically impossible between husband and wife under Indonesian law.

  NMJ's witnesses all confirm a marriage ceremony taking place in 1996. MPD's witnesses are not entered into the police investigative report.

  Made Jati’s witnesses claim to be present at the Bali marriage ceremony in 1996 (but cannot agree on the location), testimony from Michael’s witness about legal marriage in 1985 and Bali ceremony in 1994 is falsified and reversed in the court proceedings.

  Court rules a divorce granted on a 1996 marriage.

  Made Jati claimed the original marriage took place in September 1996 at her home in Kuta, Bali.

  The divorce accusation did not mention the California marriage in 1985, or the actual Bali Hindu ceremony in Sanur in May 1996.

  Consequences of a marriage in 1996 rather than 1985 or 1994 would be:

  • the children born in 1993 and 1994 would be born out of wedlock and Michael would have no legal parental rights,
  • all the assets purchased from 1985 through 1996 would belong to Made Jati alone, as “assets acquired before marriage.”

  After increasing stress in the marriage, Michael and Made Jati sign an agreement before an attorney in Singapore to
